Management Team

Derek Maetzold, President and CEO
Derek Maetzold Derek is founder, President, CEO, and Board member of Castle Biosciences, Incorporated. He is a senior biopharmaceutical leader with twenty-four years of healthcare experience, including experience and responsibility in commercial start-up leadership, business development transaction experience – development and commercialization deals, US and global marketing and sales management experience and new product planning and product launch leadership. He has led and directed the strategic plan development, infrastructure plan and organizational focus and execution for both orphan / specialty and mass market products.

From June 2003 to May 2008 he served as Officer, Vice President, Sales and Marketing of Encysive Pharmaceuticals, where he was directly responsible for all commercial areas – from start-up to execution of marketing, sales, managed markets, distribution, and reimbursement.

From 1999 to 2003, Derek worked at Schering Corporation, initially serving in the Cardiovascular and Allergy Global Marketing groups - overseeing pre-launch planning for Zetia and the international launch of Clarinex. He left Schering as Senior Director Business Development where he initiated and successfully negotiated several licensing and collaboration agreements.

Prior to Schering, he worked at Integrated Communications from 1998 to 1999 where he oversaw the global business account of Novo Nordisk, Denmark. He served as Director / Asso. Director of Marketing, North America at Amylin Pharmaceuticals from 1996 to 1998. Derek started his career at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation (now Novartis) from 1985 to 1996; working in sales and US pre-launch and launch product management. In addition to receiving a B.S. in Biology from George Mason University, he also completed coursework at the University of Calgary Health Sciences Center and the MBA program at UC-Riverside.

Toby Juvenal, Vice President, US Sales and Marketing
Toby Juvenal Toby joins Castle Biosciences as Vice President, US Sales and Marketing with over 20 years of sales, disease management, managed care, reimbursement and sales management experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and molecular diagnostic industry where he has built and led various groups including managed markets, reimbursement, sales operations, sales training, and sales teams.

Immediately prior to joining Castle, Toby was heading west coast commercialization team for deCODE Genetics where he was responsible for building the infrastructure of his commercial group, including development of SOPs and hiring and training of the Area Business Managers.

From 2005 to 2007, Toby was Vice President of Sales and a member of Leadership Team for Encysive Pharmaceuticals. Toby was brought into Encysive to plan the field sales needs, organizational infrastructure, and controls for what became an 80 person, specialty field and training group.

From 2001 to 2004, Toby was at Genzyme Corporation where he rose from Regional Business Director, through Specialty Accounts and into the leadership position of Vice President, Sales for the Renal Division in 2003 where he was responsible for a 200 person field and headquarters based group that included sales, managed markets, trade relations, account management, government accounts, and reimbursement.

Toby started his career in sales and sales management in the pharmaceutical industry with Stuart, now AstraZeneca. He then became a principal member of Stuart Disease Management Services (SDMS). Toby spent five years at Genetics Institute / Wyeth Oncology prior to joining Genzyme.

Toby received a BS in Marketing from the University of Florida.

Kristen Oelschlager, RN, Executive Director, Operations
Kristen Oelschlager Kristen joins Castle Biosciences as Executive Director of Operations with over 15 years experience in the field of nursing, clinical services, management and leadership including the start-up and growth management of a multi-location hospital and outpatient based clinical research department. Kristen joins Castle with a strong history of process management under strict QA/QC/SOP.

Recruited from the critical care areas in 1999 by Arizona Pulmonary Specialists, Kristen was charged with start-up of a clinical research department from a 15-physician group (now 26) practice. Kristen succeeded in establishing an out-patient and in-patient based operational department and exceeded the third year goal (department profitability) in the first year of operation. Kristen continued to manage the growth of the department at two locations and exceeded profitability goals in each year. She has established and maintained effective relationships and processes for laboratory activities required under protocol within the research department as well as the multiple hospitals that were used for in-patient clinical studies, including laboratory and pharmacy SOPs. She was a non-physician member of the St. Joseph's Research Consortium which brings multiple specialties and disciplines together to collaborate in support of various research endeavors.

From 1996 to 1999, Kristen served as a clinical research coordinator for the Department of Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center.

Kristen worked as an RN in the critical care setting recovering open-heart surgery patients from 1991-1995. She completed her core nursing requirements at Purdue University prior to receiving her Associate of Science, Nursing degree from the Indiana Vocational Technical College.

She recently completed a program as a Legal Nurse Consultant and has held certification as a Clinical Research Coordinator.

Kristen has also been a speaker for Actelion Pharmaceuticals, Eli Lilly, and Encysive Pharmaceuticals and has published an article in a leading respiratory medicine journal.

Dr. Kenneth D Aldape
Dr. Aldape is Professor of Pathology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. He completed his M.D. at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) in 1991. He completed his residency in Pathology and fellowship in Neuropathology in 1995. He remained on faculty at UCSF until 2001 when he moved to M.D Anderson. He is clinically active on the Neuropathology service where he examines over 1000 brain tumor specimens a year. He maintains a funded research program on molecular genetics of primary tumors including glioblastoma. He has published over 100 peer-review articles in scientific journals. His current research involves molecular genetic predictors of outcome in primary brain tumors.

Dr. Howard Colman
Dr. Colman is Assistant Professor of Neuro-Oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. He completed his M.D. and Ph.D. at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis 1997. He completed his residency in Neurology in 2001 at Washington University, and his fellowship in Neuro-Oncology at UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in 2002. He subsequently joined the faculty at UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. He is clinically active in Neuro-Oncology and is involved in clinical trial development at M. D. Anderson and brain tumor cooperative groups. He maintains a funded research program focusing on biomarkers of clinical outcome and tumor stem cells in primary brain tumors, including glioblastoma. He has published over 25 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals. One of his current research interests is the clinical application of molecular predictors to optimize treatment for primary brain tumors.
